There is more to successful major infrastructure or engineering businesses than simply building and doing things well…
Effective communications with key stakeholders can ultimately make or break a company.
Victoria’s biggest infrastructure project, the Westgate Tunnel, has invested in developing strong internal communications’ policies and systems. These processes are important for keeping all employees informed on all aspects of what’s happening with the project.
In helping set up these processes and reviewing their effectiveness, it’s clear that they are having the desired effect: an informed and engaged workforce. And it’s not news that a happy and motivated workforce is good for business because it drives productivity and, ultimately, the bottom line.
More recently, I’ve been working with one of Australia’s leading rail engineering companies on their external communications. Rail Control Systems Australia is not a name that most people will be familiar with, unless you work in the rail industry.
By helping the company develop its first ever Marketing Communications strategy, it is now taking advantage of available social and traditional media tools to engage with its external stakeholders. RCSA is now building awareness and credibility in the marketplace. Consequently, business interest has increased and the company is continuing to expand.
The lesson from both organisations is the power of good communications.
Yes, it’s important to do your job well but strategic and effective engagement is also good for business. A productive workforce combined with a market place that is familiar with and has faith in you and your company will lead to good business outcomes.
